This contribution discusses the 1972 Soviet preface to one of Flanders' favourite novels, Willem Elsschot's Kaas (Cheese). With the help of its fairly recent reception in the Anglophone world, as a means of comparison, I scrutinized how the Russian editors tried to deal with the 'un-Soviet' topics of commerce and capitalism which the novel has so famously thematized.
