Dinuclear Mn(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) Arylphosphates Incorporating 4ʹ-Chloro-2,2ʹ:6ʹ,2ʹʹ-Terpyridine Co-ligand: Efficient Catalysts for Alcohol Oxidation

Dinuclear cyclo(metallo) phosphates [M(dipp)(Cl-terpy)]2 (M = Mn (1), Ni(2) and mono nuclear cobalt phosphate [Co(dippH)(Cl-terpy)(MeOH)(H2O)].(dippH) (3) were synthesized by reacting 4ʹ-chloro-2,2ʹ:6ʹ,2ʹʹ-terpyridine(Cl-terpy) and 2,6-diisopropylphenyl phosphate (dippH2) with manganese, nickel and cobalt acetates. The formation of 1-3 is supported by spectroscopic, thermogravimetric and micro analytical data. The molecular structures of 1 and 3 have further been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Compound 1 and 2 are dimeric with two octahedral metal centres bridged by dianionic dipp ligand. On the other hand, 3 exists in monomeric form in solid state, which however on dissolution in methanol converts to the dimeric form similar to 1 and 2, as evidenced by ESI-MS studies. Compounds 1-3 have further been employed as catalysts in alcohol oxidation reactions using tert-butylhydrogenperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant. The manganese phosphate 1 exhibits better catalytic activity in terms of selectivity and substrate conversion as compared to 2 and 3 under similar conditions.
