The unique physics of seawater as it freezes inspires a technique to produce thinly layered composites that closely mimic natural nacre. The technique, called freeze casting or ice-templating, is described by Antoni P. Tomsia and co-workers in article number 1703155. The technique creates materials with a hierarchical design that can be infiltrated with a variety of components to create novel materials for engineering applications.
