Detection of Occult Invasion in Melanoma in Situ

To the Editor Bax et al recently identified individual cells and aggregates in the papillary dermis of recut sections in 12 of 34 melanomas in situ. In 6 of those 12 cases, the cells of interest resembled intraepithelial melanoma cells cytologically, while in the remaining cases, the cells of interest lacked typical cytopathologic features of melanoma but were confirmed by staining with both melan-A and SOX10 biomarkers.
