Vestibular Assessment in Cochlear Implanted Children: How to Do? When to Do? A Review of Literature

Abstract

Purpose of Review

The aims of this report are to summarize the main vestibular tests and their relevance in cochlear implantation and to perform a relevant review of literature on this topic in pediatric populations.

Findings

Vestibular evaluation is essential when cochlear implantation is planned, and it should be performed before and after the procedure. Of children with sensorineural deafness, 60% have an associated vestibular deficit. This impairment could be increased by a cochlear implantation.

Summary

Four vestibular tests are essential to explore a wide range of vestibular frequencies: the caloric test, the rotatory test, the Video Head Impulse Test and the Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials. These should be systematically performed in each cochlear implant center. Moreover, parents should be informed of the risk of vestibular deficit after cochlear implant surgery. Additional studies are needed to evaluate long term vestibular recovery abilities after auditory rehabilitation.
