Paraproteinemia and serum protein electrophoresis interpretation

Monoclonal gammopathy may be encountered in an allergist's office during evaluation for primary immunodeficiency, unexplained dermatologic disorders, or acquired forms of angioedema. Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) is usually ordered, and an abnormal result should lead to further evaluation until a diagnosis is established or a referral is made to a hematologist or rheumatologist. By definition, monoclonal gammopathy refers to the excessive production of a single immunoglobulin by a clone of plasma cells.
