Molecular basis of unilateral condylar hyperplasia?
Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) causes progressive asymmetry of the mandible. The aetiology of this growth disorder is unknown. A two-centre prospective study was established, and 10 consecutive adult UCH patients scheduled for high condylectomy were included. The resected condylar tissue was divided into two parts, one for regular histopathology and one for DNA extraction. A panel of eight selected overgrowth genes (AKT1, AKT3, MTOR, PIK3CA, PIK3R2, PTEN, TSC1, TSC2) were sequenced using next-generation...

Effect of fixation method on intergonial width stability after mandibular setback via bilateral sagittal split osteotomy
Q4: Horizontal changes occur following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) in skeletal class III patients. The aim of this study was to assess the ostoperative changes in intergonial (IG) width and compare them between the positional screw and miniplate fixation methods in BSSO. This study evaluated patients who had mandibular prognathism and underwent BSSO for mandibular setback. Internal fixation was performed bilaterally, either with positional screws in the lateral ramus or with a miniplate.

How a mint became catnip
Catmint -- or catnip -- is well-known for its intoxicating effect on cats. The odor responsible for the cats' strange behavior is nepetalactone, a volatile iridoid. Researchers have now found that the ability to produce iridoids had already been lost in ancestors of catmint. Hence, nepetalactone biosynthesis is the result of 'repeated evolution.' However, nepetalactone differs considerably from other iridoids with regards to its chemical structure and properties, and most likely its ecological functions.

Pangolins may possess evolutionary advantage against coronavirus
Pangolins lack two genes that function to sound the alarm when a virus enters the body, triggering an immune response in most other mammals. The findings are significant because, while the exotic animals can be carriers of coronavirus, they appear able to tolerate it through some other unknown mechanism. Understanding how pangolins are able to survive coronavirus may point to possible treatment options for humans.

The effect of in-lab polysomnography and home sleep polygraphy on sleep position
Abstract Purpose Little is known regarding the influence of in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG) equipment on sleep position, especially on the prevalence of supine positioning, which in many cases may lead to a more severe sleep apnea diagnosis. The aim of this study was to assess the percentage of supine sleep during an in-laboratory PSG compared to that seen during a home sleep apnea test (HSAT). ...

Robo-Cob technique; transoral endoscopic coblation tongue base resection in obstructive sleep apnea patients
Abstract Background Another transoral tongue base surgical procedure for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is described. The procedure was named as the “Robo-Cob” technique because it is similar to transoral robotic surgery (TORS) but using a coblation technology to manage tongue base hypertrophy in patients with OSA especially in countries where TORS is not an available option for such benign conditions. ...

The impact of bedtime procrastination on depression symptoms in Chinese medical students
Abstract Purpose Depression symptoms are closely related to inadequate sleep and are experienced by medical students at an increased rate. Bedtime procrastination is considered a new, important predictor of sleep deficiency. However, whether there is a correlation between bedtime procrastination and depression symptoms remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the impact of bedtime procrastination on depression symptoms among medical...

A computer-assisted human peripheral blood leukocyte image classification method based on Siamese network
Abstract A computer-assisted human peripheral blood leukocyte image classification method based on Siamese network is proposed. Firstly, a Siamese network with two identical convolutional neural network (CNN) sub-networks and a logistic regression for leukocyte five classification is designed, which can learn not only distinguishing features but also a similarity metric. Then for each category of the leukocytes, a typical sample is selected by the hematologist. To train the Siamese...

Age-related changes in mechanical properties of human abdominal fascia
Abstract The purpose of this study is to assess and model age-related changes in the mechanical properties of human fascia. The samples were divided into three age groups: group A—up to 60 years (mean age 52.5 ± 6 years), group B—61–80 years (mean age 70.4 ± 5.2 years), and group C—81–90 years (mean age 83.2 ± 2 years). A uniaxial tensile test was applied to fascia specimens cut perpendicular and parallel to fibers. The secant modulus at 5% strain, the maximum stress, and the stretch...

Germline APOBEC3B deletion influences clinicopathological parameters in luminal-A breast cancer: evidences from a southern Brazilian cohort
Abstract Purpose APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B cytidine deaminases have been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple cancers, including breast cancer (BC). A germline deletion linking APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B loci (A3A/B) has been associated with higher APOBEC-mediated mutational burden, but its association with BC risk have been controversial. Therefore, this study investigated the association between A3A/B and BC susceptibility and...

Abstract Purpose Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is one of the most frequent subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in children. Currently, short, intensive chemotherapy is used internationally and has greatly improved survival in children with BL. However, 5–10% of patients suffer recurrence after intensive chemotherapy, and the prognosis of these patients remains poor. The overall survival rate is only approximately 10%. Successful treatment of steroid-refractory immune checkpoint inhibitor-related pneumonitis with triple combination therapy: a case report
Abstract Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-related pneumonitis is a relatively rare but clinically serious and potentially life-threatening adverse event. The majority of cases can be managed by drug discontinuation, with the administration of corticosteroids added in severe cases. However, worsening of pneumonitis can develop in a subset of patients despite treatment with high doses of corticosteroids. We herein report a case of steroid-refractory ICI-related pneumonitis in a...
