Visual quality assessment of H.264 and motion JPEG compressed laparoscopy video

In this preliminary study we evaluate the relationship between subjective and objective quality assessment (QA) methods for QA of compressed medical video sequences in order to determine the whether objective methods can be used to predict subjective scores. High Definition medical video of laparascopic surgery is processed with four compression schemes (Motion JPG, three variants of H.264) each at four bit-rates (5, 12, 20, and 45 Mbps) and compared to original uncompressed sequences. The Double Stimulus Continuous Quality Scale methodology is used for subjective QA. Two full reference objective QA methods (VQM, MOVIE) are studied. Subjective and objective QA correlate moderately well with each other and suggest that the objective quality measures may be useful for QA of compressed medical video. Future work will include subjective QA with expert laparoscopic surgeons.
