Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Wound complications in post-bariatric patients undergoing body-contouring surgery after massive weight loss are not uncommon and often, surgical debridement or conservative management is necessary. Honey is one of the most ancient remedies for wound care and it is also considered to possess debriding effects. Current research has demonstrated promising results showing that honey can improve wound granulation and epithelialization, reduce exudate and shorten healing times.
METHODS: This case report has been reported in line with the CARE criteria.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 40 year-old female suffered wound infection and dehiscence after undergoing post-bariatric abdominoplasty. The patient was not interested in surgical revision and split skin grafting. Therefore, conservative wound treatment with topical Manuka honey was instituted resulting in significant clinical improvement and effective healing concurrently with good patient satisfaction.
DISCUSSION: Surgical wound complications in post-bariatric patients undergoing abdominoplasty are common and often require surgical revision or conservative wound treatment. No previous publication has addressed outpatient treatment of post-bariatric abdominoplasty wound complications with medical grade honey.
CONCLUSION: Although more research is needed for definitive conclusions of honey's efficacy, it is safe and as presented in our case, it may under certain circumstances reduce the need of surgical wound debridement and serve as a remedy for conservative treatment.

Auditory and visual 3D virtual reality therapy as a new treatment for chronic subjective tinnitus: results of a randomized controlled trial.

Auditory and visual 3D virtual reality therapy as a new treatment for chronic subjective tinnitus: results of a randomized controlled trial.

Hear Res. 2016 Jan 7;

Authors: Malinvaud D, Londero A, Niarra R, Peignard P, Warusfel O, Viaud-Delmon I, Chatellier G, Bonfils P

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Subjective tinnitus (ST) is a frequent audiologic condition that still requires effective treatment. This study aimed at evaluating two therapeutic approaches: Virtual Reality (VR) immersion in auditory and visual 3D environments and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
METHODS: this open, randomized and therapeutic equivalence trial used bilateral testing of VR versus CBT. Adult patients displaying unilateral or predominantly unilateral ST, and fulfilling inclusion criteria were included after giving their written informed consent. We measured the different therapeutic effect by comparing the mean scores of validated questionnaires and visual analog scales, pre and post protocol. Equivalence was established if both strategies did not differ for more than a predetermined limit. We used univariate and multivariate analysis adjusted on baseline values to assess treatment efficacy. In addition of this trial, purely exploratory comparison to a waiting list group (WL) was provided.
RESULTS: Between August, 2009 and November, 2011, 148 of 162 screened patients were enrolled (VR n = 61, CBT n = 58, WL n = 29). These groups did not differ at baseline for demographic data. Three month after the end of the treatment, we didn't find any difference between VR and CBT groups either for tinnitus severity (p=0.99) or tinnitus handicap (p=0.36).
CONCLUSION: VR appears to be at least as effective as CBT in unilateral ST patients.

Abstract
Among the various myopathies, Duchenne muscular dystrophy represents the myopathy with the most stereotypical respiratory evolution. This progressive respiratory failure is going to develop in a parallel way of motor deficit, conducting patients to mechanical ventilation at the end of their second decade. In the absence of curative therapeutics, respiratory cares like home ventilation and prevention of respiratory complications, in a systematic and organized way, allowed to decrease the morbidity and the mortality of these patients. It is not exceptional to meet patients with life expectancy of which overtakes about forty. Besides axial stabilization, cough assistance techniques and swallowing disorders management need to be associated to mechanical ventilation. Invasive techniques of ventilation as tracheostomy keep their place in this pathology even if alternative techniques allowing full day non-invasive ventilation were generalized these last years.

Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Mycobacterial Diseases in the Barletta-Andria-Trani Province, Italy (2005–2013)

Tuberculosis remains one of the major worldwide problems regarding public health. This study evaluates the burden of this disease in the BAT Province of the Apulia region (Italy); 12,295 patients were studied, including 310 immigrants. Tubercular disease and mycobacteriosis were found in 129 patients. The number of new TB cases/year ranged from three in 2005 to 12 in 2009. TB was more frequently localized in the lung (70.5%). 14.4% of cases were institutionalized patients for severe neurological and/or psychiatric disease. The database evidenced certain aspects of our study population: the large number of TB patients institutionalized between natives, but no larger presence of TB among HIV-positive patients in immigrants compared to Italians. Our findings should help to redefine the alarm regarding the spread of an epidemical form of TB but also to present certain criticisms regarding patient management (especially immigrants) regarding costs, hospitalization, and difficulty of reinstating the patient in the community. Further our data underscore the importance of prevalence of TB in bedridden, institutionalized patients.

The Subcellular Localization and Functional Analysis of Fibrillarin2, a Nucleolar Protein in Nicotiana benthamiana

Nucleolar proteins play important roles in plant cytology, growth, and development. Fibrillarin2 is a nucleolar protein of Nicotiana benthamiana (N. benthamiana). Its cDNA was amplified by RT-PCR and inserted into expression vector pEarley101 labeled with yellow fluorescent protein (YFP). The fusion protein was localized in the nucleolus and Cajal body of leaf epidermal cells of N. benthamiana. The N. benthamiana fibrillarin2 (NbFib2) protein has three functional domains (i.e., glycine and arginine rich domain, RNA-binding domain, and α-helical domain) and a nuclear localization signal (NLS) in C-terminal. The protein 3D structure analysis predicted that NbFib2 is an α/β protein. In addition, the virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) approach was used to determine the function of NbFib2. Our results showed that symptoms including growth retardation, organ deformation, chlorosis, and necrosis appeared in NbFib2-silenced N. benthamiana.

BackgroundThe characteristics of phenotypes of elderly patients with asthma are unknown. The aim of this study was to classify these phenotypes using lung function tests and images from high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and to identify associations between clinical characteristics and phenotypes.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in 165 elderly patients (>65 years of age) who underwent a multidimensional assessment of clinical and functional status and comorbidity. The patients were divided into three phenotypes: (1) asthma-predominant, (2) asthma-obstructive airway disease (OAD) overlap without emphysema, and (3) asthma-OAD overlap with emphysema (asthma-emphysema overlap) based on chest HRCT. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was constructed to evaluate the cutoff for differentiating between the two OAD phenotypes. Multivariate analysis was also used to distinguish between these two phenotypes.ResultsThe phenotypes were asthma-predominant in 48 patients (29%), asthma-OAD without emphysema in 36 (22%), and asthma-emphysema in 81 (49%). Patients with asthma-emphysema were more frequent smokers. In multivariate analysis, smoking status (odds ratio 2.92: 95% CI 1.21–7.00, P = 0.03) and % predicted FEV1 ≤70% (odds ratio 3.18: 95% CI 1.13–8.92, P = 0.03) differed significantly between the asthma-emphysema and asthma-OAD without emphysema phenotypes.ConclusionsHalf of elderly patients with asthma are characterized by asthma-emphysema overlap. Our results showed that elderly patients with asthma who are smokers and have moderate or severe OAD are also likely to have emphysema.

Effect of imatinib on growth of experimental endometriosis in rats.

Effect of imatinib on growth of experimental endometriosis in rats.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol. 2015 Dec 25;197:159-163

Authors: Yildiz C, Kacan T, Akkar OB, Karakus S, Seker M, Kacan SB, Ozer H, Cetin A

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Currently, medical and surgical treatment options for endometriosis are limited due to suboptimal efficacy, and also safety and tolerance issues. Long-term use of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogs, androgenes, and the danazol, which are widely used drugs for endometriosis, is usually not possible due to their suboptimal safety and tolerance profile. The lack of an effective, tolerable and safe treatment option for endometriosis makes animal models of experimental endometriosis necessary to study candidate drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of imatinib on the experimental endometriosis in a rat model.
STUDY DESIGN: Endometriosis was induced by autotransplantation of uterine tissue into the peritoneal cavity. Twenty-four rats, which had visually confirmed endometriotic implants on subsequent laparotomy, were randomized into three groups to receive imatinib (25mg/kg/day, p.o.), anastrozole (0.004mg/day, p.o.), or normal saline (0.1mL, i.p.) for 14 days. After removal of endometriotic tissue and H & E staining, endometriosis score was determined according to a semiquantitative histological classification. Also, immunostaining with primary antibodies including VEGF, CD117, and Bax were used for immunohistochemical (IHC) examination.
RESULTS: Both anastrozole and imatinib suppressed the growth of endometriotic tissue and reduced the number of ovarian follicles. Although the difference was not statistically significant, imatinib was less effective than anastrozole for treatment of endometriosis.
CONCLUSION: Imatinib effectively treats experimental endometriosis by its inhibitor effects on angiogenesis and cell proliferation.

Combined deletion of cathepsin protease family members reveals compensatory mechanisms in cancer.

Combined deletion of cathepsin protease family members reveals compensatory mechanisms in cancer.

Genes Dev. 2016 Jan 15;30(2):220-232

Abstract
Proteases are important for regulating multiple tumorigenic processes, including angiogenesis, tumor growth, and invasion. Elevated protease expression is associated with poor patient prognosis across numerous tumor types. Several multigene protease families have been implicated in cancer, including cysteine cathepsins. However, whether individual family members have unique roles or are functionally redundant remains poorly understood. Here we demonstrate stage-dependent effects of simultaneously deleting cathepsin B (CtsB) and CtsS in a murine pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor model. Early in tumorigenesis, the double knockout results in an additive reduction in angiogenic switching, whereas at late stages, several tumorigenic phenotypes are unexpectedly restored to wild-type levels. We identified CtsZ, which is predominantly supplied by tumor-associated macrophages, as the compensatory protease that regulates the acquired tumor-promoting functions of lesions deficient in both CtsB and CtsS. Thus, deletion of multiple cathepsins can lead to stage-dependent, compensatory mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment, which has potential implications for the clinical consideration of selective versus pan-family cathepsin inhibitors in cancer.

4SC-202 activates ASK1-dependent mitochondrial apoptosis pathway to inhibit hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

4SC-202 activates ASK1-dependent mitochondrial apoptosis pathway to inhibit hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun. 2016 Jan 7;

Authors: Zhang F, Wan F, Li Z, Fu M

Abstract
The aim of the present study is to investigate the potential anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell activity by 4SC-202, a novel class I HDAC inhibitor (HDACi). The associated signaling mechanisms were also analyzed. We showed that 4SC-202 treatment induced potent cytotoxic and proliferation-inhibitory activities against established HCC cell lines (HepG2, HepB3, SMMC-7721) and patient-derived primary HCC cells. Further, adding 4SC-202 in HCC cells activated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, which was evidenced by mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening, cytochrome C cytosol release and caspase-3/-9 activation. Inhibition of this apoptosis pathway, by caspase-3/-9 inhibitors, mPTP blockers, or by shRNA-mediated knockdown of cyclophilin-D (Cyp-D, a key component of mPTP), significantly attenuated 4SC-202-induced HCC cell death and apoptosis. Reversely, over-expression of Cyp-D enhanced 4SC-202's sensitivity in HCC cells. Further studies showed that 4SC-202 induced apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) activation, causing it translocation to mitochondria and physical association with Cyp-D. This mitochondrial ASK1-Cyp-D complexation appeared required for mediating 4SC-202-induced apoptosis activation. ASK1 stable knockdown by targeted-shRNAs largely inhibited 4SC-202-induced mPTP opening, cytochrome C release, and following HCC cell apoptotic death. Together, we suggest that 4SC-202 activates ASK1-dependent mitochondrial apoptosis pathway to potently inhibit human HCC cells.

Tissue composition regulates distinct viscoelastic responses in auricular and articular cartilage.

Tissue composition regulates distinct viscoelastic responses in auricular and articular cartilage.

J Biomech. 2015 Dec 29;

Authors: Nimeskern L, Utomo L, Lehtoviita I, Fessel G, Snedeker JG, van Osch GJ, Müller R, Stok KS

Abstract
It is well-accepted that articular (ART) cartilage composition and tissue architecture are intimately related to mechanical properties. On the other hand, very little information about other cartilage tissues is available, such as elastin-rich auricular (AUR) cartilage. While thorough investigation of ART cartilage has enhanced osteoarthritis research, ear cartilage reconstruction and tissue engineering (TE) could benefit in a similar way from in-depth analysis of AUR cartilage properties. This study aims to explore the constituent-function relationships of AUR cartilage, and how elastin influences mechanical behavior. Stress-relaxation indentation and tensile tests were performed on bovine ART and AUR cartilage. Elastase incubation was performed to simultaneously deplete elastin and sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAG), while hyaluronidase incubation was used to deplete sGAG-only, in order to systematically investigate matrix components in material behavior. ART and AUR cartilages showed different viscoelastic behaviors, with AUR cartilage exhibiting a more elastic behavior. Higher equilibrium properties and limited viscous dissipation of strain energy were observed in AUR cartilage, while ART cartilage exhibited a rapid viscous response and high resistance to instantaneous loading. In conclusion, loss of sGAG had no effect on auricular mechanics in contrast to articular cartilage where GAG loss clearly correlated with mechanical properties. Auricular cartilage without elastin lost all compressive mechanical integrity, whereas in articular cartilage this was provided by collagen. This work shows for the first time the involvement of elastin in the mechanical behavior of ear cartilage. In future, this data can be used in AUR cartilage TE efforts to support reproduction of tissue-specific mechanical properties.

Bevacizumab safety in Japanese patients with colorectal cancer.

Bevacizumab safety in Japanese patients with colorectal cancer.

Jpn J Clin Oncol. 2016 Jan 15;

Authors: Hatake K, Doi T, Uetake H, Takahashi Y, Ishihara Y, Shirao K

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Bevacizumab (Avastin(®)) was approved in Japan in April 2007 for patients with advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer. To address the limited clinical experience in Japanese patients, a post-approval surveillance study was undertaken in bevacizumab-treated patients in Japan.
METHODS: Bevacizumab (5 or 10 mg/kg every 2 weeks) was administered with chemotherapy; patients were observed for 26 weeks from initiation of treatment. The primary objective was to investigate the incidence of adverse drug reactions, particularly those of interest for bevacizumab. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify potential risk factors for adverse drug reactions.
RESULTS: In total, 2712 patients were registered and 2696 patients were included in the safety analysis. Hypertension (13.1%), hemorrhage (10.5%) and proteinuria (4.5%) were the most common adverse drug reaction. The incidences of serious adverse drug reactions were low: gastrointestinal perforation occurred in 0.9% of patients, hemorrhage in 1.3%, arterial thromboembolic events in 0.3%, venous thromboembolic events in 1.3% and wound-healing complications in 0.4%. The incidence of bevacizumab-specific adverse drug reactions was not influenced by the bevacizumab dose. Multivariate analyses identified risk factors for the following adverse drug reactions: hypertension (prior/concurrent hypertension); tumor-associated bleeding (performance status, prior/concomitant anticoagulant or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use); proteinuria (sex, performance status, prior/concurrent diabetes and proteinuria); gastrointestinal perforation (primary tumor in situ, concurrent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use); venous thromboembolic event (treatment stage, port insertion).
CONCLUSIONS: The safety profile of bevacizumab-containing regimens in this Japanese population was comparable with studies performed in Western countries. Bevacizumab is generally well tolerated in Japanese patients with advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer.

Vegetable and Fruit Acceptance during Infancy: Impact of Ontogeny, Genetics, and Early Experiences.

Adv Nutr. 2016 Jan;7(1):211S-219S

Abstract
Many of the chronic illnesses that plague modern society derive in large part from poor food choices. Thus, it is not surprising that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, aimed at the population ≥2 y of age, recommends limiting consumption of salt, fat, and simple sugars, all of which have sensory properties that we humans find particularly palatable, and increasing the variety and contribution of fruits and vegetables in the diet, to promote health and prevent disease. Similar recommendations may soon be targeted at even younger Americans: the B-24 Project, led by the US Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA, is currently evaluating evidence to include infants and children from birth to 2 y of age in the dietary guidelines. This article reviews the underinvestigated behavioral phenomena surrounding how to introduce vegetables and fruits into infants' diets, for which there is much medical lore but, to our knowledge, little evidence-based research. Because the chemical senses are the major determinants of whether young children will accept a food (e.g., they eat only what they like), these senses take on even greater importance in understanding the bases for food choices in children. We focus on early life, in contrast with many other studies that attempt to modify food habits in older children and thus may miss sensitive periods that modulate long-term acceptance. Our review also takes into consideration ontogeny and sources of individual differences in taste perception, in particular, the role of genetic variation in bitter taste perception.

Astilbin inhibits Th17 cell differentiation and ameliorates imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like skin lesions in BALB/c mice via Jak3/Stat3 signaling pathway

Publication date: March 2016
Source:International Immunopharmacology, Volume 32
Author(s): Ting-Ting Di, Zhi-Tong Ruan, Jing-Xia Zhao, Yan Wang, Xin Liu, Ying Wang, Ping Li
The flavonoid astilbin is the major active component extracted from the rhizome of Smilax glabra, which has been widely used in China to treat inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory disease in which T helper 17 (Th17) cells play an important role, provoking inflammation. We employed an imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like mouse model to investigate the effect of astilbin in inflammation. Mice were administered 25 to 50mg/kg astilbin. Inflammation of psoriasis-like lesions was assessed by histology, circulating levels of T cells were assessed by flow cytometry and cytokines by bead-based immunoassay. Jak/Stat3 in isolated T cells was assessed by Western blotting and RORγt expression was assessed by RT-PCR. Administration of astilbin ameliorated IMQ-induced keratinocyte proliferation, infiltration of CD3+ cells to psoriatic lesions and ameliorated elevations in circulating CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and inflammatory cytokines (IL-17A, TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-γ and IL-2). In vitro, astilbin inhibited Th17 cell differentiation and IL-17 secretion of isolated T cells, and inhibited Jak/Stat3 signaling in Th17 cells, while up-regulating Stat3 inhibitor SCOSE3 expression in psoriatic lesions. Thus, astilbin likely alleviates psoriasis-like skin lesions by inhibiting Th17 related inflammation. Astilbin represents as an interesting candidate drug for immunoregulation of psoriasis.

Abstract
Extranodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a rare subtype of lymphoma. Recurrent mutations in the JAK-STAT pathway, recently reported in ENKTL cases, are interesting in terms of both pathogenesis and inhibitor therapy. However, the frequencies of these mutations are low and variable among reports, and other pathognomonic mutations in ENKTL remain to be elucidated. In the present study, we performed targeted capture sequencing of 602 cancer-related genes from 25 frozen ENKTL samples, 11 of which were matched to normal samples. We identified several recurrent somatic mutations involving BCOR (32%), TP53 (16%), DDX3X (12%), FAT4 (8%), NRAS (8%), MLL3 (12%) and MIR17HG (8%). The pattern of BCOR aberrations (1 nonsense and 5 frame-shift mutations, a mutation leading to a splicing error, and gene loss) suggested that loss of function of BCOR was the functionally important outcome of such changes. We reviewed the literature and reanalyzed the public data on BCOR aberrations and found that the aberrations were frequently found in myeloid neoplasms, but, interestingly, were highly specific to ENKTL among lymphoid malignancies. Given the high frequency and pattern of aberration, BCOR is likely to play an important role in ENKTL pathogenesis as a tumor suppressor gene. This article is protected by copyright. Glyoxalase I drives epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition via argpyrimidine-modified Hsp70, miR-21 and SMAD signalling in human bronchial cells BEAS-2B chronically exposed to crystalline silica Min-U-Sil 5: transformation into a neoplastic-like phenotype

Glyoxalase I (Glo1) is the main scavenging enzyme of methylglyoxal (MG), a potent precursor of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). AGEs are known to control multiple biological processes, including epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), a multistep phenomenon associated with cell transformation, playing a major role in a variety of diseases, including cancer. Crystalline silica is a well-known occupational health hazard, responsible for a great number of human pulmonary diseases, such as silicosis. There is still much debate concerning the carcinogenic role of crystalline silica, mainly due to the lack of a causal demonstration between silica exposure and carcinogenesis. It has been suggested that EMT might play a role in crystalline silica-induced lung neoplastic transformation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether, and by means of which mechanism, the antiglycation defence Glo1 is involved in Min-U-Sil 5 (MS5) crystalline silica-induced EMT in BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells chronically exposed, and whether this is associated with the beginning of a neoplastic-like transformation process. By using gene silencing/overexpression and scavenging/inhibitory agents, we demonstrated that MS5 induced hydrogen peroxide-mediated c-Jun-dependent Glo1 up-regulation which resulted in a decrease in the Argpyrimidine-modified Hsp70 protein level which triggered EMT in a novel mechanism involving miR-21 and SMAD signalling. The observed EMT was associated with a neoplastic-like phenotype. The results obtained provide a causal in vitro demonstration of the MS5 pro-carcinogenic transforming role and more importantly they provide new insights into the mechanisms involved in this process, thus opening new paths in research concerning the in vivo study of the carcinogenic potential of crystalline silica.

Activation of classical estrogen receptor subtypes reduces tight junction disruption of brain endothelial cells under ischemia/reperfusion injury

Publication date: Available online 16 January 2016
Source:Free Radical Biology and Medicine
Author(s): Jin A. Shin, Joo Chun Yoon, Min-Suk Kim, Eun-Mi Park
Ischemic stroke, which induces oxidative stress in the brain, disrupts tight junctions (TJs) between brain endothelial cells, resulting in blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown and brain edema. Estrogen reduces oxidative stress and protects brain endothelial cells from ischemic insult. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of estrogen on TJ disruption and to examine the roles of classical estrogen receptor (ER) subtypes, ERα- and ERβ, in estrogen effects in brain endothelial cells (bEnd.3) exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) injury. Estrogen pretreatment prevented OGD/R-induced decreases in cell viability and TJ protein levels. ERα- and ERβ-specific agonists also reduced TJ disruption. Knockdown of ERα or ERβ expression partially inhibited the effects of estrogen, but completely reversed the effects of corresponding ER subtype-specific agonists on the outcomes of OGD/R. During the early reperfusion period, activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α/vascular endothelial growth factor was associated with decreased expression of occludin and claudin-5, respectively, and these changes in TJ protein levels were differentially regulated by ER subtype-specific agonists. Our results suggest that ERα and ERβ activation reduce TJ disruption via inhibition of signaling molecules after ischemic injury and that targeting each ER subtype can be a useful strategy for protecting the BBB from ischemic stroke in postmenopausal women.

Diet and Feeding Behavior of Leontopithecus chrysomelas (Callitrichidae) in Degraded Areas of the Atlantic Forest of South-Bahia, Brazil

Abstract

Habitat disturbance alters plant diversity and food resource availability, affecting the ecology, and ultimately the survival and reproduction, of species depending on those plants. Studies in degraded areas serve to improve our understanding of the consequences of habitat modification for endangered species and to guide conservation actions. We studied diet composition, monthly variation in feeding behavior and fruit feeding time, and dietary diversity in two golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) groups ranging in a degraded area of the Atlantic Forest in South-Bahia, Brazil, over a 12-mo period. We recorded feeding behavior and food items consumed through continuous observations and focal animal sampling, and performed dietary analyses on samples from consumed fruits. Substrate manipulation to search for animal prey was the feeding activity most frequently observed, followed by fruit consumption. We observed nectar drinking and exudate feeding at low frequencies from April through July. Bromeliads were the principal foraging substrate. We observed the use of 114 plant species, confirming the large dietary diversity reported for the species. Individual trees from the family Melastomataceae, common in degraded forests, accounted for the highest visiting frequencies (40%). Fruit availability was the main factor explaining variation in monthly fruit feeding time, despite the absence of climatic seasonality. Nutritional or energetic characteristics did not affect fruit choice. Differences in floristic composition appear to be a major determinant of the species' diet in different study areas. Regional forest restoration programs should consider including advanced forest species, to improve both forest quality and animal mobility between fragments.

Joint Assessment of Bioreduction of Chromium(VI) and of Removals of Both Total Chromium and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in Sequential Hybrid Bioreactors

Abstract

The overall purpose of this work was to evaluate the treatment system performance of sequential hybrid bioreactors, one without aeration and another with intermittent aeration, in the bioremoval of Cr(VI) and total chromium and in the removal of total organic carbon (TOC). The saturation kinetic curves were studied with initial concentrations of Cr(VI) of 80, 120 and 150 mg L−1. A reference test was performed before adding chromium to the system, with the intention of checking the influence of the presence of chromium on the TOC removal. During the bioreactor regeneration, the chromium removal was evaluated, after each kinetic studied. For kinetics with 80 mg L−1 of Cr(VI), the results showed that after 600 h of operation, there was no saturation of bioreactors, yielding 87 % overall removal of Cr(VI) and 62 % chromium total. For initial concentrations of Cr(VI) of 120 and 150 mg L−1, only the non-aerated bioreactor reached saturation after 228 and 216 h of operation, respectively. In regeneration, it was found in all the assays performed that the chromium concentration at the outlet of the bioreactor became almost zero at a maximum of 72 h of operation. In the blank test, the TOC removal achieved was 64 %, while in the three tests in the presence of chromium, this was approximately 55 % (80 mg L−1), 41 % (120 mg L−1) and 31 % (150 mg L−1). After cell lysis by ultrasound, it was found that the chromium concentration retained inside there was lower than the concentrations present in the environment.

Mercury in marine fish, mammals, seabirds, and human hair in the coastal zone of the southern Baltic

Abstract

Mercury (Hg), aside from having high toxicity, is characterized by its ability to biomagnify in the marine trophic chain. This is an important problem especially in estuaries, or in the coastal zone, particularly near the mouths of large rivers. This study was conducted in the years 2001–2011, in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea near to the mouth of the River Vistula, which is the second biggest river discharging into the Baltic. Mercury concentration was measured in the tissues and organs of cod, flounder, herring, seals (living in the wild and in captivity), great black-backed gulls, and African penguins from Gdańsk Zoo, and also in human hair. Penguins and seals at the seal sanctuary in Hel were fed only herring. In marine birds and mammals and in the pelagic herring, the highest Hg concentration was observed in the kidney and in the liver, while in cod and flounder (located on a higher trophic level) the muscles were the most contaminated with mercury. In gray seals living in the seal sanctuary, Hg concentration in all analyzed tissues and organs except the kidneys was lower in comparison with seals living in the wild. The comparatively small share of fish in the diet of local Polish people and their preference towards the consumption of herring contributed to low concentration of Hg in their hair. The protective mechanisms related to detoxification and elimination of mercury were shown to be more effective in the seals than in the penguins, despite the former consuming around 10 times more food per day.

Influence of Abiotic Factors on the Spatio-temporal Distribution of Rotifers in a Subtropical Lake of Western Himalaya

Abstract

Spatial and temporal variation of rotifers in Lake Sattal of Western Himalaya was studied from January 2011 to December 2012. A total of 22 rotifer species could be identified in the lake with a biannual mean abundance of 2.07 × 106 individuals/m3 in eastern basin and 1.92 × 106 individuals/m3 in western basin having maximum abundance during summer season. The main factors regulating distribution patterns of rotifers are nutrients, viz. NH4-N, PO4-P, NO2-N, and NO3-N, and turbidity, pH, and transparency. Six species of rotifers were deliberated as important species based on importance value index. Keratella quadrata, Colurella obtusa, and Asplanchna priodonta flourish under low turbid conditions. Philodina roseola demonstrated as a phosphorous-tolerant species, whereas K. quadrata and C. obtusa are thermophilous and their distributions are highly influenced by pH and transparency. The total organic matter (TOM) of the sediment has a significant positive correlation with species richness and diversity. The hierarchical environmental descriptor suggests water chemistry has a greater significant role in assemblages of rotifers as compared to sediment characteristics.
