Mucous membrane pemphigoid of the oral lichen type: a retrospective analysis of 16 cases

Abstract

Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and oral lichen planus (OLP) may be difficult to distinguish. We describe the characteristics of a retrospective series of patients with MMP with isolated oral involvement who presented clinical features indistinguishable from OLP. Proper classification of these MMP cases critically depended on the performance of direct immunofluorescence (DIF) microscopy studies.
