Treatment with selenium-enriched Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG A-905 partially ameliorates mucositis induced by 5-fluorouracil in miceAbstractPurposeGastrointestinal mucositis is a major problem associated with cancer therapy. To minimize these deleterious effects, simultaneous administration of antioxidant components, such as selenium, can be considered. There is a growing interest in the use of yeasts because they are able to convert inorganic selenium into selenomethionine. In the present study,...

Orally administered salecan ameliorates methotrexate-induced intestinal mucositis in miceAbstractPurposeMethotrexate (MTX) is a widely used cancer chemotherapy agent. The efficacy of MTX is often limited by serious side effects, such as intestinal mucositis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of water-soluble β-glucan salecan on MTX-induced intestinal toxicity in mice.MethodsIntestinal mucositis was induced in C57BL/6 mice by intraperitoneal injection of MTX for two consecutive...

Enhancing antitumor response by combining immune checkpoint inhibitors with chemotherapy in solid tumorsDrug development in oncology is shifting from targeting intrinsic properties of cancer cells to the tumor microenvironmental and the immune system of the host. Boosting T-cell memory may lead to more durable anticancer responses than seen with conventional anticancer therapy [1]. Endogenous anticancer response can be enhanced by blocking inhibitory checkpoint molecules.

Negative emissions of carbon dioxide through chemical-looping combustion (CLC) and gasification (CLG) using oxygen carriers based on manganese and ironAbstractCarbon capture and storage (CCS) is an economically attractive strategy for avoiding carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from, e.g., power plants to the atmosphere. The combination of CCS and biomass combustion would result in a reduction of atmospheric CO2, or net negative emissions, as plant growth is a form of sequestration of atmospheric carbon....

Quantifying greenhouse gas emissionsAbstractThe assessment of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air pollutants emitted to and removed from the atmosphere ranks high on international political and scientific agendas. Growing international concern and cooperation regarding the climate change problem have increased the need to consider the uncertainty in inventories of GHG emissions. The approaches to address uncertainty discussed in this special issue reflect attempts to improve national inventories, not...
