Assessing translation and interpretation skills

In this chapter on the assessment of translation and interpreting skills we will briefly outline the origins of translation and interpretation testing and we will review current assessment practices in the educational as well as the professional domain along reliability and validity criteria. In view of the scope of this volume, we will focus on the relationship between language testing and the assessment of translation and interpreting skills. Both translation assessment and interpreting assessment have an obvious link with the measurement of foreign language competence since knowledge of the target language (understanding the source language and mastering the target language) is prerequisite for delivering a successful translation or interpreting performance. However, both translation competence and interpreting competence encompass more than foreign language competence as is evidenced by the definitions of translation and interpreting competence in the literature and the test constructs that have been proposed in reported assessment practices. A sound assessment practice within this domain should therefore take the different dimensions of translation and interpreting competence into account.
