Clindamycin alone may be enough. Is it time to abandon rifampicin for hidradenitis suppurativa?

Abstract

We read with great interest the article by Albrecht et al.1 regarding the possible use of rifampicin monotherapy in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS).

The combined clindamycin plus rifampicin protocol is generally the first‐line treatment for moderate‐severe HS,2 however, recent two studies claimed that rifampicin significantly decreases clindamycin concentration. Moreover, we recently outlined the role of clindamycin as effective monotherapy in HS.2 In particular, our result evidenced a higher efficacy of clindamycin alone on draining tunnels and similar response of clindamycin mono‐therapy on the nodules‐abscesses versus combined therapy.
