Medrobotics out of Raynham, Massachusetts won FDA 510(k) clearance to introduce its Flex Robotic System for performing colorectal endoscopic procedures. Heralding the future we live in, the robotic snake is inserted transannally and is then steered using a 3D joystick to the treatment site. It can take on different shapes, depending on the path it took to reach the target. Once in place, it will remain rigid to permit the introduction of instruments, such as graspers and needle drivers, to perform whatever procedure is necessary.
Rigid instrumentation limits the reach of the physician, particularly through anatomical lumens that twist and turn. The Flex system consists of an set of rings that gently bend in relation to each other as it's advanced forward. An endoscope and illumination at the tip allow for visualizing the anatomy and the joystick provides an intuitive way to direct the robotic snake's tip.
The system has previously received FDA clearance for use during transoral procedures.
