Colorectal cancer is increased in chronic liver diseases: Is surveillance the answer?

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The risk of CRC is markedly elevated in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and comorbid inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); there are strong expert consensus and guidelines to support annual CRC surveillance colonoscopy in these patients. Aside from those with PSC and IBD, it has been unclear whether or not patients with other chronic liver diseases are at increased CRC risk, either before or after transplantation.
