Fasting-mimicking diet plus chemotherapy in breast cancer treatment
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18194-1A clinical trial published in Nature Communications examined the effect of fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) during chemotherapy in breast cancer patients. The overall negative study results highlight the need for ameliorating future trial design and investigating alternative FMD-based therapeutic combinations.

On demand shape memory polymer via light regulated topological defects in a dynamic covalent network
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18116-1Stimuli-responsive soft materials are of interest for a range of applications. Here, the authors report on the use of light triggered catalysts to control topological defect driven isomerization of polymer networks and demonstrate application in shape memory polymers.

Quantifying net loss of global mangrove carbon stocks from 20 years of land cover change
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18118-zMangroves and the carbon they store are threatened by deforestation, but the efficacy of policies to protect them is unknown. Here the authors assess changes in mangrove carbon stocks between 1996 and 2016 and show less loss than previous methods estimated, indicating conservation has had a positive effect.

Unfinished business after five decades of ozone-layer science and policy
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18052-0The Montreal Protocol has begun to heal the Antarctic ozone hole and avoided more global warming than any other treaty. Still, recent research shows that new unexpected emissions of several chlorofluorocarbons, carbon tetrachloride, and hydrofluorocarbons, are undermining the Protocol’s success. It is time for policymakers to plug the holes in the ozone hole treaty.

CFTR trafficking mutations disrupt cotranslational protein folding by targeting biosynthetic intermediates
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18101-8Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal genetic disease that is primarily caused by misfolding of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Here authors show that disease-causing mutations located within the first nucleotide binding domain of CFTR have distinct effects on nascent polypeptides.

Two-color nanoscopy of organelles for extended times with HIDE probes
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-17859-1High density environmentally sensitive (HIDE) probes allow for long time-lapse super-resolution imaging of live cells. Here the authors develop a second HIDE probe with a bio-orthogonal labelling strategy to enable two-color nanoscopy of two organelles over extended periods.

Strange semimetal dynamics in SrIrO3
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18092-6It remains challenging to resolve the dynamics of charges with different mobilities in multi-band systems. Here, the authors report a Raman scattering study of the dynamics of holes and electrons in semimetallic SrIrO3, which is well described by a marginal Fermi liquid phenomenology, with frequency dependent scattering rates close to the Planckian limit.

The geography of COVID-19 spread in Italy and implications for the relaxation of confinement measures
Nature Communications, Published online: 26 August 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18050-2Releasing COVID-19 lockdown measures risks increases in transmission. Here, the authors estimate the increase in transmission rate for different regions in Italy and estimate that isolation of 5.5% exposed and highly infectious individuals would be needed to compensate for a 40% increase in transmission.
